Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about QR Code Builder. Can't find what you're looking for? Visit our contact page.

Is QR Code Builder completely free to use?
Yes, QR Code Builder is 100% free to use. You can create unlimited QR codes with full customization options, download them in PNG or SVG format, and use them for any purpose — personal or commercial. There are no hidden fees, premium tiers, or sign-up requirements.
Do I need to create an account to generate QR codes?
No, you do not need to create an account. QR Code Builder allows anonymous QR code generation without any registration. Simply visit the site, choose your QR code type, enter your content, customize the design, and download — all without signing up.
What types of QR codes can I create?
QR Code Builder supports 8 types of QR codes: URL (website links), Plain Text, WiFi network credentials, vCard (contact information), Email (with pre-filled subject and body), Phone numbers, SMS messages, and Geographic locations. Each type has dedicated input fields optimized for that content.
Can I customize the colors and design of my QR code?
Absolutely! You can customize foreground and background colors, choose from multiple dot shapes (square, rounded, dots, classy, classy-rounded, extra-rounded), customize corner square shapes and corner dot shapes. You can also choose from pre-designed templates for a professional look.
What file formats are available for download?
QR Code Builder supports PNG and SVG file formats. PNG is ideal for digital use and printing at fixed sizes, while SVG is a vector format that scales to any size without losing quality, making it perfect for large prints, billboards, and professional design workflows.
What sizes can I download QR codes in?
You can download QR codes in multiple sizes: 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048, and 4096x4096 pixels. For most digital uses, 512px or 1024px is sufficient. For high-quality printing, we recommend 2048px or 4096px. SVG format provides unlimited scaling.
Will my QR codes expire?
No, static QR codes generated by QR Code Builder never expire. The QR code data is encoded directly into the pattern, so it will work forever as long as the linked content (such as a website URL) remains active. There is no time limit or scan limit.
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Static QR codes encode data directly in the QR pattern and cannot be changed after creation. Dynamic QR codes use a redirect URL that allows you to change the destination, track scans, and gather analytics without reprinting the code. QR Code Builder currently supports static QR codes, with dynamic QR codes planned for a future update.
Can I use QR Code Builder for commercial purposes?
Yes, all QR codes generated with QR Code Builder can be used for commercial purposes without any restrictions. You can use them on business cards, marketing materials, product packaging, restaurant menus, event tickets, and any other commercial application.
How do I create a WiFi QR code?
To create a WiFi QR code: 1) Select the "WiFi" type from the QR code type selector. 2) Enter your network name (SSID). 3) Enter your WiFi password. 4) Select the encryption type (WPA/WPA2, WEP, or None). 5) Optionally mark if the network is hidden. 6) Customize the design and download. When scanned, the QR code will automatically prompt the user to connect to your WiFi network.
How do I create a vCard QR code?
To create a vCard QR code: 1) Select the "vCard" type. 2) Fill in contact details including first name, last name, phone number, email, company name, job title, website, and address. 3) Customize the QR code design. 4) Download and print. When scanned, the QR code will prompt the user to save the contact information directly to their phone.
What error correction level do you use?
QR Code Builder uses the highest error correction level ("H") by default, which can recover up to 30% of damaged data. This means your QR codes will still scan reliably even if partially covered, slightly damaged, or printed at lower quality. This is especially important for printed QR codes exposed to wear and tear.
Can I generate QR codes in bulk?
Yes, you can generate QR codes in bulk using our REST API. Send requests programmatically with your CSV data to create up to 100 QR codes per batch. A browser-based CSV upload tool is currently under development. Visit our Bulk QR Generator page for a complete guide on preparing your data and using the API for batch generation.
Is there an API for QR code generation?
Yes, QR Code Builder provides a REST API for programmatic QR code generation. The API supports all QR code types, customization options, and output formats. Visit the API Documentation page for details on endpoints, parameters, and code examples in multiple programming languages.
Are my QR codes and data secure?
Yes, we take privacy seriously. QR codes are generated client-side in your browser whenever possible, meaning your data never leaves your device. For server-side operations (like SVG generation), data is processed temporarily and never stored. We do not track, log, or store the content of your QR codes. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
What should I do if my QR code is not scanning?
If your QR code is not scanning: 1) Ensure sufficient contrast between foreground and background colors. 2) Make sure the QR code is printed or displayed at an adequate size (minimum 2cm x 2cm for close scanning). 3) Check that the "quiet zone" (white border) around the code is not cropped. 4) Verify the encoded content is valid (working URL, correct WiFi credentials, etc.). 5) Try scanning with a different device or QR reader app.
What is error correction and why does it matter?
Error correction is a built-in feature of QR codes that adds redundant data, allowing the code to be scanned even when partially damaged, dirty, or obscured. QR Code Builder uses Level H (High) error correction by default, which can recover up to 30% of damaged data. This uses Reed-Solomon encoding — the same technology used in CDs and satellite communications — to ensure maximum reliability for printed codes exposed to wear, weather, and handling.
What is the maximum amount of data a QR code can store?
A QR code can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. However, more data means a more complex QR pattern with smaller individual modules, which requires a larger physical size for reliable scanning. For best results, keep URLs under 100 characters and text content concise. If your URL is long, consider using a URL shortener to create a simpler, more scannable QR code.
Can I create a WiFi QR code so guests can connect without typing a password?
Yes, WiFi QR codes are one of the 8 types supported by QR Builder. Enter your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type (WPA/WPA2, WEP, or open). When guests scan the code, their phone automatically prompts them to join the network. WiFi QR codes work completely offline — no internet connection is needed to read the credentials from the code.
What is the difference between PNG and SVG formats?
PNG is a raster (pixel-based) format ideal for digital use and standard printing. It works everywhere but cannot be scaled up without losing quality. SVG is a vector format that uses mathematical shapes instead of pixels, allowing it to scale to any size without losing quality. Use SVG for large-format printing (posters, banners, billboards) or when working with a graphic designer. For most everyday uses, PNG at 1024px or higher is sufficient.
How should I size my QR code for printing?
Follow the 10:1 rule: your QR code should be at least 1/10th the size of the expected scanning distance. For a business card (scanned at 30cm), use at least 3cm. For a poster (scanned at 1-2 meters), use at least 10-15cm. For a banner (scanned at 3+ meters), use at least 30cm. Always test on the actual printed material before ordering a large batch.
Do QR codes work on all smartphones?
Yes, virtually all modern smartphones can scan QR codes. iPhones with iOS 11 or later and Android phones with Android 10 or later include built-in QR code readers in their camera apps — no third-party app is required. Simply point the camera at the QR code and a notification will appear to open the encoded content. Older devices may need a free QR scanner app from their app store.
How is QR Code Builder funded if it is free?
QR Code Builder is supported by non-intrusive display advertising. We show a small number of ads on the site, placed below the main content so they do not interfere with the QR code creation and download experience. This model allows us to offer the full feature set — all 8 QR code types, full customization, and high-resolution export — at no cost to users.
